I asked my friend Anessa Daviero, mother of Gino’s best friend, and owner of NYC’s Headdress Salon, where I’ve been going for years, to share some good products and tips with us, and she happily obliged.
Don’t forget to brush: “It’s all about a healthy, happy scalp, and super shiny hair. So many clients I talk to don’t know the benefits of brushing, which stimulates the scalp and moves the oils from roots to ends. I use a Mason Pearson for its quality and natural bristles. Be gentle when doing this— if you have long hair and any tangles work those out gently, by starting at the mid section getting the knots out, then working your way back to the scalp. A few gentle strokes from your roots to ends will add tons of shine. I style my hair this way on no wash/rinse days. I brush my hair and scalp, then spray Hairstory Undressed at my roots followed by a little Hair Balm to the ends, shaping and smushing my waves into shape. If you have straighter hair you’d probably like to use a powder after to add lift at the root. I like a non-aerosol version like Rahua Voluminous Powder. Curly peeps should do the scalp brushing on wash day unless you like to wear an airy and fluffy look which I happen to love, and you could add some nourishing oil like 14th Night Hair Elixir to any crunchy ends.
Don’t just shampoo with your hands: “More scalp health— I love a scrubby like this for when I cleanse my hair, or for days that I just rinse it. It feels great and gives a good massage.”
Try an exfoliator: “I’ve also been using a salt scrub on my hair once a month. I use this one from innersense, and I also heard great things about the Goop one, so I’ll try that next.“
Go for the gloss. “I have been color glossing so many of my clients these days— rich tones and shiny hair are what I’m into this spring. It’s no commitment, and will wash out in about 10-12 weeks.”
Curly hair help: “A new product I have been LOVING for curls is Innersense I create definition. It’s very lightweight but super hydrating and has a lot of hold to encourage waves and stop frizz. I usually have to cocktail products for curls (hydration and hold) but this one has a great balance of both. I start when the hair is pretty wet and add the product in sections working up the head. Clients have said that even on day three their hair has great definition.”
Have thin, limp hair? “love a salt spray at the root for added volume— Rahua Enchanted Island is my favorite because it’s made with Himalayan salt, (from the earth) not sea salt, which makes it less drying. You can use it on damp or dry hair. If you blow dry, use your fingers to lift the root for maximum volume. Also, avoid using heavy balms or conditioners at the root— always only use midway to ends.”
I have a curvy body like your friend Anessa’s—can she share what the dress/jumpsuit is that she’s wearing? Thx!
