These iconic shoes were first invented in Spain and France in as early as 1322 (here’s the whole history). Of course they’ve also become a cool-girl staple (see the impossibly chic Parisian muse Jeanne Damas, above). I love a wedge with a longer boot-cut jean and a cap-sleeved tee (very Jane Birkin). You can always go the sexy route like Jeanne and pair them with a flirty top and skirt (these are similar to hers), or sportier with something easy to walk in. We love options!
First up, this cute denim Mary Jane that would be just right with white, black or blue jeans, or any number of skirts and dresses.
This metallic one is giving ‘70s disco vibes. It would also take the sweetness from a floral dress down a notch.
This is the real-deal easy classic, and comes in so many good colors.
I love love love the color combo and mix of canvas and velvet here.
J. Crew’s awning striped version is a beachy take on the sling back.
These pumps (now under $50) are so perfectly ‘70s— I’m picturing my mom in them with a Cacharel dress.
You can’t beat the price of these, and they have a nice, slight heft to them (plus, a fun two-tone sole)
These are a ‘70s sandal hybrid — think Thom Mcan (IYKYK) and I love them for that.
This one is like a chic, elevated sneaker.
These are the ones I wear with my old, extra-long Levi’s and Wranglers.
Those Penelope Chilvers—swoon! I love espadrilles and just recently learned a more secure way to tie them by pulling the ribbon that goes around the back part out and flipping it to the front, creating a loop to put your foot through. They are so much easier to walk in this way. Here is a video showing it: https://www.tiktok.com/@mrsmlmode/video/7245551720950992155?lang=en
Thom McAn! thank you, the memories!
