Anyone else get super psyched when this teenage book of dreams appeared at their doorstep? This particular issue was chock full of summer inspiration, and probably hit the mailbox in late April when there were still patches of snow on the ground. The editors took Phoebe Cates and some other models (Cherie LaRocque, maybe?) to Marrakech where they bought that great jewelry she’s wearing, and showed us all kinds of cool clothes and beauty tips. Just seeing this cover made me think back to all the good products we used to use that are actually still around. Anything major that I’m missing? Drop it in the comments!
I recently bought this little pot of Indian Earth (who knew it was still available?!) It’s exactly the same as it used to be, and is great all over the face and lids (applying it without looking insane takes a while— I suggest a kabuki brush instead of the puff it comes with). This compact also looks pretty cool for slightly flushed cheeks.
Kathy, my best friend from 6th grade, had her own room and bathroom up in the attic (so glamorous) and she always used an almond and honey scrub exactly like this one. p.s. It’s worth it for the delicious smell alone.
Who can forget Love’s Baby Soft? So good! And the Fresh Lemon was my number two. Then, in a more sophisticated teenage phase, my cool friend Abby introduced me to Anaïs Anaïs.
I had far too many Sun-In mishaps in my day (once a stranger called me “pumpkin head”). Looks like they’ve perfected this kind of thing— here’s a promising modern alternative that’s supposed to work even on brown hair.
Brian from Pilgrim (one of my favorite designer vintage shops) recently reminded me about Buf-Puf. I started using them (gently) and they really do take off so much dead skin, your face feels so smooth and ready for any serum or moisturizer.
Remember the clean antiseptic smell of Sea Breeze? Keep it in the fridge all summer— so refreshing!
Nothing wrong with a little Noxzema to remove dirt and makeup (also, another intoxicating smell that will take you back).
I love this retro brand Vacation. They’ve copied classic Ban de Soleil (for the San Tropez taaaan), but geniusly gave it an SPF of 30.
I used to go crazy for the Tootsie Roll Lip Smacker because it gave a nice brown tint (anyone else have the big fat size on a cord around their neck?) Here’s a fun set of all the candy scents.
My friend best high school friend Anne always used Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, which also has a hint of a clean, antiseptic scent, and she still loves it!
Anne also reminded me that all the chic moms used Erno Laszlo Black Soap (it’s also the one in that famous scene in Annie Hall where Alvy goes to Annie’s apartment to kill a spider in her bathroom).
OMG, dying, every single one of these. I had major olfactory memories! I would add: Herbal Essence shampoo, the green one, and lemon up shampoo, with the plastic lemon top.
