Guest Editor: Jessica Moriber
Former stylist, designer, and restaurant owner, now a holistic life coach
The background: I can remember spotting Jessica on the street in my neighborhood all the time and clocking her cool, casual style, and that hair! She was the owner of chic local eatery l’estudio, so she (unknowingly) inspired me often— I’ve also secretly been obsessed with her classic Cartier Santos for years. Before that, she worked for a decade as a creative production and events lead in the fashion, lifestyle and hospitality industries, planning events and hosting and producing experiences around the globe.
Since she’s a real people person, and actually deeply cared about her clients, she decided to make a big career shift that could support clients in a new and more impactful way, hence her new role as a life coach! Check out her site here and book a free 30-minute consultation (I can’t wait to have mine). p.s. I know we’re all thinking it, so let’s try to get her perfect vintage sweatshirt look with this.
Hometown: NYC. I currently live between Brooklyn, NY and Southwest France
Self-described style: Always the “off duty” edit. The summer-by-the-beach version where the ‘90s meet the ‘70s and day flows easily into night without a full outfit change or the need to swap sandals for heels. Or ok, you swap for the heels and don't give up the cut-offs.
Style icons: My friend April Johnson (editor’s note: she’s featured in The Cool Factor). She mixes hi-low in the most perfect way. She’s always original, knows what works well for her, and has a knack for finding any piece you might need with zero notice. She is not afraid to break the rules and always looks effortlessly chic. Also Emmanuelle Alt— She’s always original, seemingly fearless and surpasses time, seasons, age and any known trend. Margot Tenenbaum. That coat. Those eyes. There is an air of rebellion or renegade in the best way possible in all three of these women which I absolutely appreciate.
Where I get my inspiration: Novels, films and traveling and people watching. When I travel things feel expansive, refreshed, the context shifts from the normal day to day making things stand out in a way I might take for granted otherwise, a splash of color, the crop of a pant, all connected to a gesture, a lifestyle, a question really… What's life like here? Why did this catch my attention? Who is she? Does she always look like this? What would I want to learn from her. Funny, no? How a pattern or hem or cut of a dress can get you thinking about what you might want to aspire to.
Best thing about my job: Transformation. Witnessing people transform, evolve and thrive in their health, wellbeing and life visions. Seeing the real results in their better health outcomes in mind, body and spirit, resiliency cultivated, restored energy, goals set and reached. A better-known self.
Worst thing about my job: Self-promotion and summarizing a mission statement to fit in however many letters Instagram allows you in the bio. I have a methodology, I have training and credentials yet all of my clients are 100% amazing and unique. The same rules do not apply to everyone. Summing that up on paper can be challenging.
Favorite career moments: Way back when I was working as a stylist, I also created a collection of handbags. I had a meeting with Ships Ltd, then an epic concept store in Tokyo. I was showing my samples out of a suitcase. One of the buyers noticed an unfinished piece, a leather bag, hand-punched and sewn, incomplete in multiple pieces with a needle and thread attached. They pointed to it curiously and asked to see it. They ordered 400. I was then literally in business. My completely unfinished bag sealed the deal. I walked out of that meeting onto the street and cried with joy in the blazing summer heat.
Three things I can’t live without: Dark chocolate, sparkling mineral water, sunshine. And of course, Love.
Motto: There is a solution for everything.
