This perfect old photo of Jane Birkin looking as laid-back and cool as ever in a slouchy, effortless top got me thinking we all need something similar. So let’s do it.
First up is Quince’s easy gauze number that’s 100% cotton, and could be worn a little more open with the sleeves rolled way up (à la Jane). It comes in the usual colors, but this blue is just so good (especially with jeans).
Everlane’s gathered-neck cotton top can do whatever a tee can, and is now only $26.
The cool hand-block print here gives a nice, beachy vibe.
This pretty piece mimics authentic Victorian styling and will only get better with age.
The seersucker gives this sweet shirt a bit of crispness.
The cool square shape and slight crop make this a winner.
I love Gap’s lacy cotton blouse in the light lilac, but the white and black are great , too (of course), and they’re all 40% off today.
This one has a nice old-timey menswear stripe and back pleating.
J. Crew’s 100% linen peasant top has pretty red contrasting embroidery (or you could go for monochrome black or white).
Mango’s slightly sheer cotton top would look equally chic with trousers or a simple bikini.
