Yes, her style has been featured and broken-down to death, but for good reason!—She’s the GOAT, who knew how to mix classics, like jeans and tees, so they never felt boring, and really, no one will ever make that namesake bag look as cool (in case you didn’t know, her Birkin had stickers and tchotchkes all over it). So let’s break down a few of her outfits that we can easily copy with a few good pieces. First is this shot of her in an old Victorian cotton shirt and perfect-fitting jeans that I always go back to. This Me+Em top is a great option, and Dôen’s is also super sweet. I also like this one from Anthropologie, and someone needs to snap up this less frilly vintage guy. Her jeans are perfectly worn in, like these Levi’s, and here’s a classic, vintage-y belt that’s similar to hers.
Next, behold how she perfectly mastered a plain white tee and jeans. The tee is all about that snug French fit, and this one has a similar feel, this too (and it comes in other colors), and this looks super soft. Jane’s jeans look like they’ve been deconstructed, but this shape is great (and more refined for real life). She’s got her famous basket, and you can copy her with this lidded version, but if that feels too Red-Riding-Hood, this Clare V. bag is cute, and you can always go for a classic straw tote. And the cool heeled sandals look a lot like these.
Jane was British, but later became a French citizen, so, of course, she had a thing for trench coats. The one in this shot is slightly A-line and girlie, but this one could have a similar vibe and would serve you well for years. Her cute jeans are slightly flared and are unraveling at the hem— you could wear this pair long, or cuff them once for the same look (and these come already cuffed). The sweet ballet shoes take everything to a more gamine place, and I really like this new style from Margaux.
Ok that’s enough for denim,— Here she is with Serge Gainsbourg in another good white tee, cool white trousers, a classic dark blazer, and Converse.
A more recent shot shows her in a long mac, baggy gray pants—Nili Lotan’s Shon pants are a perfect choice, and these slouchy corduroy sweatpants tell a similar tale. Then there’s the black sweater, gray sneakers, and an oversized red bandana like this or this big silk one.
LOVE everything about this. I can't believe how timeless and ahead of her time she was (how is that possible?) The white trousers with the converse - chef's kiss! And everything about her has an air of not giving a shit with a big, huge smile.
I do think Jane Birkin is boringly overused as a style icon, generally speaking, but you put a great spin on this and I'm intrigued!
